A driver diagram is a logic model used to illustrate the hypothesized relationships between a project’s aim, the key factors that influence it (primary and secondary drivers), the change ideas to be tested, and the measures used to assess progress (process measures). Driver diagrams are an effective tool for communicating both the why and the how of a quality improvement (QI) project to internal audiences (such as project team members) and external audiences (including organizational leaders and colleagues outside the project team).
By helping teams visualize the connections among these core elements of your project, a driver diagram clarifies what the QI team is trying to accomplish and how it plans to achieve its aim. Use of this tool can promote team alignment, guide decisions about where to focus improvement efforts, and serve as a reference point throughout the QI project to monitor progress and refine strategies over time.
