Wayside House of Hamilton- Discharge Rates

Project status as of June 12th, 2024

This team sought to reduce the early discharge rate among clients at their substance use treatment centre after noticing a high level of voluntary and involuntary withdrawals prior to program completion (90 days). As the project progressed, they realized that some clients were admitted to the program despite lacking the readiness necessary to successfully complete it. To address this issue, the team developed and integrated new “readiness” measures into their intake process, including readiness-specific questions during intake interviews. The team is continuing to refine these measures and looks forward to seeing the outcomes unfold in the months to come.

Project Highlights:

Problem/Opportunity Statement:

Between January 2022 and October 2023, the residential program’s early discharge rate was 45%, resulting in reduced outcomes for clients (e.g. returning to substance use, disconnection from supports) and staff (e.g. decreased morale and productivity).

AIM Statement:

Wayside House’s residential treatment program will reduce its average monthly discharge rate in three steps:

  • to 25% by December 2024
  • to 35% by March 2024
  • to 30% by June 2024
