Making Sense of QI and Data in Mental Health and Addictions

Quality Improvement

Think of quality improvement (QI) as a structured way to solve problems and make things better. In healthcare, it means asking:

· What’s not working well for clients or staff?

· How could we improve it and how do we know if it’s actually better?

QI uses simple tools (like process maps or Plan-Do-Study-Act cycles) to test changes, learn from them and build on what works. It’s not about doing more – it’s about doing things better.

Data

Data is just information. In this context, it:

· Sees where things aren’t working (like long wait times or gaps in access)

· Measures improvement over time

· Makes informed decisions instead of guessing

It’s not about spreadsheets. It’s about stories and patterns that help you see what is needed to better support the organization, its clients or the community at large.

QI + Data = Better Decisions + Better Outcomes

It’s a way to ensure that every change you make leads to better care, fewer barriers, and stronger, more resilient systems.
